A project was undertaken to research the potential for using native grasses in open cut coal mine rehabilitation in the Hunter Valley. The project was proposed by the Hunter Coal Environment Group (HCEG), which provides a forum for those professionally concerned with environmental issues relating to coal mines.

Open cut or surface mining in coal is a suitable choice when coal seams are closer to the natural surface. It is an effective method of retrieving a higher proportion of coal when compared to underground mining.

When coal seams are near the surface, it may be economical to extract the coal using open cut (also referred to as open cast, open pit, mountaintop removal or strip) mining methods. Open cast coal mining recovers a greater proportion of the coal deposit than underground methods, as more of the coal seams in the strata

Underground Mining. Underground Mining is generally used for areas where the mineral seam is too far underground for open cut mining to be of use. A tunnel, called a decline, is created to allow workers and machinery to reach the location of the minerals. Stope mining is used for most hard rock mining of minerals such as copper, silver, lead ...
