I'm not familiar with the appearance of sand box sand, but I use normal silica sand for ballast, landfill and scenery. The only drawback is it needs to be painted to get rid of the crystalline look. I imagine the sand you have will be every bit as good, if not better.

Silica sand (used for fine tile grout and for sandblasting) in some parts of the country is available in a light beige or a light gray. It is washed before it is bagged so there are no clay fines in it. There are different grit sizes so depending upon how large you want your ballast to be, ask to see samples of 30 grit, 60 grit and 90 grit.
The lower the number the bigger the grain. As an example, #16 silica sand has bigger grains than #30 sand. #16 Silica (50 lb. bag) – used for artificial grass lawns and artificial sports fields (although usually in conjunction with crumb rubber for sports fields in a 30% to 70% ratio by volume).
