Stelco Hilton Works, recently renamed Stelco Hamilton, still remains one of the largest integrated steel mills in Canada, producing 2.5 million tons of steel. Many of the production facilities, which relied on rail transportation have been demolished in favour of new steelmaking technology so the railway no longer plays as important a role.
These include two facilities that were closed in 2003 – the Plate Mill and Welland Pipe - in addition to the Rod Mill closure announced in 2004. Additional facilities under consideration are the No. 2 and No. 3 pickle lines and the 56-inch strip mill (located at the Hamilton plant), Stelwire/Stelfil and Stelpipe.
