Looks like you still can't get the mill spindle down to the table, though, which is a real pain if you want to mill anything you can't hold in .

Mar 05, 2017· I bought a Smithy 1340 years ago for three reasons. One is I didn't have the space. Two is I didn't knowhow much I would be using it. I was working at the mines a lot more than I was at home then. Three, is it appeared to be the heaviest machine out of all the 3 in 1's. It also is the easiest 3 in 1 out there to go from lathe to mill.
I am a Smithy owner as well (about 6 months), I have the Granite 1220LTD, and am a newbie. I got the 3in1 for the same reason as others, space. I have to share space in my garage with 2 cars, my table saw, bandsaw, etc, and all the other junk.

Jun 16, 2010· I have had some issues with my Smithy but they have greatly improved that machine I believe in 2003 or 2004. If you have limited funds I would recommend the Smithy Granite MAX series 1340, it has a larger head stock hole (1.6 ), will accept longer material (40 ) and more speeds.

Dec 10, 2017· I looked hard at the Smithy Granite 1340 IMax partially out of nostalgia (remember seeing the Smithy Machines advertised in Popular Mechanics years ago). After reading all the reviews, watching all the videos I could find and talking with Smithy, I came to the conclusion I would not be happy with the 3 in 1 due to overall robustness of the machine.
